Thousands of old wells in Ontario are abandoned every year. In some cases, these old wells have poorly secured lids, deep pits and may present a major hazard to unsuspecting children and animals. Furthermore, these wells may cause contaminants to enter your local aquifer. In turn, this would render the surrounding water wells unsafe for use. Under Ontario legislation, landowners are liable to properly decommission the wells.
